Wood siding may require more maintenance than vinyl or other engineered options, but its sustainability and natural beauty are hard to beat. It offers more design versatility, does not require any overlap or expansion joints which can be unsightly, and can last hundreds of years when properly installed and maintained.
The traditional horizontal clapboardsiding look can have nearly any desired exposure, with typical exposures in the 4"-4.5" or 6.5"-7" range. It can be primed and painted or stained. Cedar is durable, naturally resistant to rot and moisture and provides more insulation value than other types of siding.
Typically the most expensive option to purchase and install, cedar shingles offer a long lasting and unique look bringing great visual texture to a homes exterior. They offer a timeless look with multiple exposure options and can be primed and painted, stained or sealed with a water sealer.
Often times the least expensive wood siding option, board and batten siding is often pine and can vary in exposure widths. The "board" portion boards are typically between 5.5"-11.5" wide and are run vertically and the gaps are covered with the "batten" boards, typically 1.5"-2.5" wide. The boards can then be primed and painted or stained. Although the cheapest wood option, these pine boards must be maintained properly as they are less resistant to moisture and rot than other cedar options.
